If you’re a mobile hairdresser with two clients, a gardener who buys nothing but soil, or a consultant with zero business overheads, you may have looked at the e-Invoicing news and thought, “I don’t receive invoices, so I don’t need a platform. I’ll worry about this in 2027 when I have to report my sales.”

It’s a logical thought, but there is a catch in the law that’s worth knowing now so you can avoid an unexpected bill from the tax office.

1. Your SIREN Number is the Key

The 2026 reform isn’t actually about whether you buy things; it’s about your status. If you have a SIREN number, you are a registered professional in the eyes of the French government.

  • The Rule: By September 1, 2026, every business with a SIREN number must be registered in the national “digital directory.”

  • The Obligation: You must choose a Plateforme Agréée to be your official digital address. Think of it like a digital mailbox. Even if nobody sends you a letter, the law says you must have the mailbox installed and registered.

The tax office has published a very clear calendar here.

2. The 2026 “Identity” Deadline

Many micro-entrepreneurs don’t have a pro bank account or pro insurance, so they truly don’t receive any supplier invoices. However, the law doesn’t make exceptions for being too small.

If your SIREN is not linked to a platform in the national directory by September 2026:

  • Warning: The tax office will send a formal notice giving you 3 months to sign up.

  • Penalty: If you still haven’t picked a platform, a €500 fine is triggered. This can climb to €1,000 every quarter until you are compliant.

3. Your Ghost Year (2026–2027)

If you really do have a teeny-tiny business, you will likely sign up for a platform in 2026 and do absolutely nothing with it for a year.

If you have no pro expenses, your platform will sit quietly empty. You won’t start E-reporting until September 1, 2027. But you still must be signed up by 2026 to stay compliant and avoid those warnings.

Summary: If you have a SIREN, you’re in.

It doesn’t matter if your business is “invisible” or if you don’t even have a professional bank account. If you are a registered pro, the law wants you plugged in by September 1, 2026.

Taking 10 minutes to register for a basic platform in 2026 is simply your way of telling the system, “I’m here, I’m legal, and I’m ready.” Then, you can get back to your clients and worry about the reporting side in 2027.
